February 2008 Archives

You would think that a service who has a history of removing blogs from their Top 100 would actually be keeping an eye on their Top 100.  I just noticed that Matt Cutts is listed twice within their list.  A qucik check of archive.org shows that the blog has been within a '/blog' subdirectory since it was created in 2005.

But yet Technorati sees the main directory as a blog.

I do hope they fix that some time soon.
I'm thinking about doing some more writing in the future and was looking for some input on what to start off with.  Feel free to comment:

Barry Nelson In Casino RoyaleI'm in the mood for pilots today so I'll give you another one.  It's the original James Bond film, Casino Royal from 1954.  What a lot of folks don't know is that the recent movie version was actually the third version of the story.  Here's the details from Wikipedia since I'm too lazy and busy to write it up on my own:

Casino Royale is a 1954 television adaptation of the novel of the same name by Ian Fleming. It was the first film adaptation of a James Bond novel.

Background:
In 1954, producer and director Gregory Ratoff of CBS paid Ian Fleming $1,000 to adapt Casino Royale into a one-hour television adventure as part of their Climax! series.

The episode, Casino Royale, aired on October 21, 1954 and starred Barry Nelson as secret agent "Card Sense" James 'Jimmy' Bond and Peter Lorre as Le Chiffre. For this Americanised version of the story, Bond is described as an agent for "Combined Intelligence", while the American character Felix Leiter from the original novel became "Clarence Leiter," a British agent for Station S, and a combination of Leiter and Rene Mathis. The name "Mathis" was given to the leading lady, who is named Valerie Mathis (instead of Vesper Lynd).

The hour long showing itself is split into three acts:

  • Act I: Opening -- Opening of Baccarat scene
  • Act II: Opening of Baccarat Scene -- Hotel Room finale Opening
  • Act III: Hotel Room finale Opening -- Ending
Cast:
  • Barry Nelson - James Bond
  • Peter Lorre - Le Chiffre
  • Linda Christian - Valerie Mathis
  • Michael Pate - Clarence Leiter (given as "Letter" in the credits)
  • Eugene Borden - Chef DeParte
  • Jean DeVal - Croupier
  • Gene Roth - Henchman
  • Kurt Katch - Henchman
Legacy:

After the production of Casino Royale, CBS invited Fleming to write 32 episodes over a two-year period for a television show based on the James Bond character. Fleming agreed and began to write outlines for this series. When nothing ever came of this, however, Fleming grouped and adapted three of the outlines into short stories and released the 1960 anthology For Your Eyes Only along with an additional two new short stories.

This was the first screen adaptation of a James Bond novel, and was made before the formation of EON Productions. When MGM eventually obtained the rights to the 1967 film version of Casino Royale, it also received the rights to this television episode.

According to Lee Pfeiffer, a well known James Bond expert, the Casino Royale episode was lost for decades after its first broadcast on 21st October 1954. It was not until early 1980s that the show was finally found and released on VHS. It also aired on TBS as part of a Bond film marathon. However, the VHS release and TBS presentation did not include the full finale of the adaptation, which was at that point still lost. Eventually, the missing footage (minus the last few seconds of the credits) was found and included on a Spy Guise & Cara Entertainment VHS release. Spy Guise offered pre-orders for a DVD release, but rights issues with MGM forced them to scuttle the plans. MGM subsequently included the truncated version on its DVD of the 1967 Casino Royale.

In 2007, a discount DVD from Digiview Entertainment was released that featured the truncated version, possibly sourced off the 1967 MGM Casino Royale DVD. It is generally found in stores such as Dollar General and Wal-Mart, usually for the price of one dollar. It is a single disc with the only special feature being previews of other Digiview DVDs. The DVD does feature some high production values including motion chapter selection and an attractive menu system that also plays an isolated version of the films main theme.

Not sure how long this will be online so download it if you're interested.  If the player doesn't work for you, you'll need the DivX Driver.

I've been meaning to write this one for quite some time.  You'll have to forgive me for coming so close to the deadline.  My sister pointed me towards this.

Bangor Daily News is getting folks to knit or crochet a 6-inch square from washable yarn, such as cotton or acrylic, and send it to them. They will be sewn together into small blankets and donated to The Animal Orphanage and the Bangor Humane Society to serve as bedding for cats.

The deadline is February, 26th (I know.  I should have posted this earlier.) and those who get the squares in before then will have their names entered into a drawing form a couple of books.

More information here.

daria.jpgI seem to get a search engine hits for Daria episodes so I'll give you one.  Here's the black and white pilot for Daria, Sealed With a Kick.

I wonder how long this one will stay online.

First they don't own up to losing a woman's laptop and gets slapped with a $54 million lawsuit.  Now at a Florida store, a cop tasers a shopper in a Daytona Beach store.

As some folks have noted, I've had some photos here on the site recently.  Awhile back one of the folks I helped over in wordpress.com land went out and purchased themselves a new digital camera.  Not knowing what to do with their older one, they dropped me an email and asked if I wanted it.  Gotta admit that I've never felt comfortable with taking photos because of my thyroid tremor so even though I said yes, I was concerned about how they would come out.

Well I finally got a chance to offload the images from the camera.  You'll note that some of them are from last year.  I realized that I didn't have any card reader to read the SD card included with the camera.  Tommy and Donna from over at Brandon's Smile Ministry (I'm still trying to get Google to see their site first with a search for the name instead of mine.) were nice enough to go out and buy me a reader as well as a charger.

Yes, some of the photos are very blurry.  I know that and pointing this out to me will just bother me so please don't do it.  Some photos I took 4 or 5 times trying to get a decent picture.  Heck, Donna took most of the street pictures in there.

I've got to go back and organize them and give them descriptions.  I'll do that in a day or two.

Dr. Mike's Gallery

edit: Someone care to name the gallery?  Or is Dr. Mike's Gallery good enough?

reedit: I've not given credit to the person who sent me the camera as I noticed that their site is no longer hosted on wp.com.  I don't know where they've moved to and I don't have their email address handy.  If they see this, please feel free to leave me a comment and I'll be happy to give a link and publicly thank you.

I was over at Quantcast registering a site for a client and noticed that wordpress.com is listed on their front page as a "Recently Quantified Publisher." We'll ignore for now that they've been registered with them and Quantcast's javascript has been on the site since February, 2007 and what they mean by "Recently" but I had a chuckle looking at the traffic numbers for sites hosted on their servers.

Rather interesting that icanhascheezburger.com gets roughly ten times the traffic that scobleizer.com does.

On my walk in this morning to UNCC, I found a recent letter from the IRS on the side of the road.  While the letter contained the name and current address of the person, (Of course it would.  It is a letter after all.  How else would it get to the person?) the person's social security number and phone number were also included in the letter.

Besides wondering why the IRS would send out such a letter containing such information in light of all of the problems with identity theft in today's world, one has to wonder why and how the letter wound up on the side of the road.  If I was some person with evil intent, I could be going nuts with this information.  Can you say "Wide screen television"?  I knew you could.

Santos Ernesto Alvarado of Charlotte, NC?  You got very lucky today.  I shredded the letter that you lost.

Free Trac Hosting

assembla-logo.gifOK, the domain renewal issue got fixed for this domain and it's been renewed so I guess you're all stuck with me for another year.  Gotta admit though that I'm still annoyed that it took four support tickets, a number of comments on a number of blogs, and general fussing to get it resolved and I've still never received anything besides a general "It should work" bit at least it's been resolved now.  My complaint about Automattic employee conduct from back in June is still not resolved and I doubt it will ever been answered but at least I still have this domain.

Anyway, I wanted to make a quick plug for assembla.com.  They offer free trac hosting along with a system for such extra features like tickets, wikis, etc for programming projects.  I use it a lot for our own projects and as well as keeping base installs for open source projects as well as the pre installed upgrades and plugins for our clients.  Makes life a lot easier and we don't have to host trac ourselves.

edit: One extra feature that you get for free is that you can mark any project as private.  That's why I'm not giving folks any links to our own tracs as most of them have non-GPL'ed code that we're not allowed to give out.

reedit: I can no longer recommend Assembla as a trac host, either as a free or paid host.  I've found their employees to be very rude and their service lacking.  I'm currently looking at other hosts such as Codespaces and plan on updating this post once I have.
