We’ve moving

Just a quick mention that I’m moving sites around today.  I bought myself a small VPS for my Christmas present this year and am spending the day moving the sites over to it.  Things may be broken for a bit.  Just a heads up. 🙂

edit: Quick Web got back to me to let me know that they have a coupon for a 25% discount recurring for the life of the account.  If you pick up a XEN VPS, be sure to enter XEN25 during check out. (I think it says so on their site but just to throw that in there.)

Some Bling Bling for the Doc Doc

giftregistry.gifSome foolish person asked me a while back if I had an Amazon Wishlist.  I have to admit that I didn’t because I haven’t been doing much reading lately and what I have been reading, I’ve been doing it in digital form on my iPod Touch.

Anyway, I’ve gone ahead and created an Amazon Wishlist in case anyone is interested.  Have to admit that there’s really not much on there that is cheap but it’s there.  I’ve also gone ahead and created a local wishlist as well for stuff that I haven’t on Amazon or if I’m looking for something second hand.

Christian Children’s Fund Rejects the Goodwill of RolePlaying Gamers

Stories like this trouble me.  Every year GenCon, what’s probably the largest annual gaming convention, holds a charity auction for the sponsored charity that year.  Two years ago, it was Make-A-Wish.  Last year it was Christel House International.

This year, the charity was supposed to be Christian Children’s Fund. They were chosen by Gary Gygax‘s estate because he had supported the organization previously.  Some folks state that they were his favorite charity.  Instead they turned down the money as well as their status as official charity.

It’s being reported that the organization turned down the money because they felt the money would have been tainted since it was coming from gamers and from the sales of gaming material, specifically Dungeons and Dragons material.  Or as Rich Burlew puts it “puts an irrevocable taint of evil on the filthy lucre that us demon-worshipping gamers might want to use to, say, donate to starving children.”

Now there’s two sides to this story of course along with some gray area.  CCF is stating they they turned down the position because of misuse of their logo.  Not sure why they couldn’t work with GenCon to straighten out the mess nor do we know what these other reasons were because the logo misuse but that is their response.  Folks are also stating that they’ll never give the organization another cent while others are suggesting that we should all remain calm and hope and pray that things will work out.   Others are quesioning their “Christian” status.

But then we have the gray area.  Folks seem to be forgetting that GenCon is currently being sued for an outstanding donation by LusasArts for the Make-A-Wish Auction a couple of years back.

Who’s right and who’s wrong?  Well the money this year went to Fisher House Foundation and they received almost twice what was raised the previous year.  CCF’s response really sounds like butt covering and damage control to me but they may have had an issue with the use of their logo.  We don’t really know and chances are we’ll probably never know.  They have every right to reject and and all donations that they receive.  Politicians do this all the time.  Of course nothing was stopping them from taking the money and keeping their mouths shut.

Me?  I’m just impressed that I actually wrote an actual blog post.  Even with that annoying bug screwing up the editor.  How often do you see that?

edit: There’s an interesting thread on the Giant in the Playground forums that’s worth a read.  And, yes, I’m aware that there’s a number of typos in the Post.  I’ll fix them later when I have the time.

Your spare square can help cats

I’ve been meaning to write this one for quite some time.  You’ll have to forgive me for coming so close to the deadline.  My sister pointed me towards this.

Bangor Daily News is getting folks to knit or crochet a 6-inch square from washable yarn, such as cotton or acrylic, and send it to them. They will be sewn together into small blankets and donated to The Animal Orphanage and the Bangor Humane Society to serve as bedding for cats.

The deadline is February, 26th (I know.  I should have posted this earlier.) and those who get the squares in before then will have their names entered into a drawing form a couple of books.

More information here.

So what’s with the pictures?

As some folks have noted, I’ve had some photos here on the site recently.  Awhile back one of the folks I helped over in wordpress.com land went out and purchased themselves a new digital camera.  Not knowing what to do with their older one, they dropped me an email and asked if I wanted it.  Gotta admit that I’ve never felt comfortable with taking photos because of my thyroid tremor so even though I said yes, I was concerned about how they would come out.

Well I finally got a chance to offload the images from the camera.  You’ll note that some of them are from last year.  I realized that I didn’t have any card reader to read the SD card included with the camera.  Tommy and Donna from over at Brandon’s Smile Ministry (I’m still trying to get Google to see their site first with a search for the name instead of mine.) were nice enough to go out and buy me a reader as well as a charger.

Yes, some of the photos are very blurry.  I know that and pointing this out to me will just bother me so please don’t do it.  Some photos I took 4 or 5 times trying to get a decent picture.  Heck, Donna took most of the street pictures in there.

I’ve got to go back and organize them and give them descriptions.  I’ll do that in a day or two.

Dr. Mike’s Gallery

edit: Someone care to name the gallery?  Or is Dr. Mike’s Gallery good enough?

reedit: I’ve not given credit to the person who sent me the camera as I noticed that their site is no longer hosted on wp.com.  I don’t know where they’ve moved to and I don’t have their email address handy.  If they see this, please feel free to leave me a comment and I’ll be happy to give a link and publicly thank you.

Help Dr. Mike have a holiday

Yup, still here. Been having a lot of problems with daria.be lately and I’m still trying to get things worked out over there.

New month. Bought myself a monthly bus pass so I wouldn’t have to walk around in the 90 degree weather we normally have during the month. Had some other bills as well this month as well as some small assistance to a couple of local clients as well so I’m once again tapped out.

I’m taking up a small collection and I apoligize for the short notice. Since everything’s going to be closed this July 4th for the holiday, I’m going to try to take myself out for a couple of movies (Probably Shrek and the new Fantastic Four movies) and maybe some dinner. I’m hoping to come up with about $35 for Wednesday. If you would like to drop me a few bucks, I would be very grateful. I’ll have a Paypal link up shortly in the sidebar.
