Is Harvard having a problem with keeping it up?

spam.jpgI know that I’ve talked about sites going prospam or ignoring their spam problem in the past but even I have to admit that this borders on being obscene.  For a good time, go over to Google and see how many times Viagra appears on their site.  I had originally thought it was more of an issue with their student blog site and with comment spam that hadn’t been dealt with (edit: Oh wait, I guess that is an issue.  Maybe they need to try Typepad Antispam instead of using Akismet.) but it now looks like some wikis (and maybe a forum or two) are where the problem lies.

I wonder if someone knows something about the professors over at Harvard.  Maybe the medical school should form an outreach program.

And it looks like other folks have noticed the problem as well.  Heck, Microsoft even used Harvard.edu as an example of how to search for such problems.

I’m purposely not giving links so not to add to the problem.  You can find enough of them via the Google search up there.

Moved the Feeds Over to Feedburner

FeedBurner-256x256.png

Yup, still working on changes.  There’s more coming shortly as well.  I’ve gone ahead and fixed the lists in the footer that list the latest posts as well as comments.  I’ve also added in the updated list of most read posts for 2008.

If you’re reading this post via RSS, you may have noted that there’s a new URL. (Don’t worry.  The old URLs will redirect to the new one.) I’ve gone ahead and moved the RSS Feeds over to Feedburner.  I’ve done this so I can also offer subscriptions to my feeds via email as well.  Plus I can keep better track of how many folks read my site every day.  Last time I looked, the main RSS feed was getting accessed over 700 times every day.

As I noted, there’s no need to change your RSS reader as the old URLs redirect to the new one.  But if you want to go ahead and make the change, the new URL is: http://feeds2.feedburner.com/DrMikesSteakDinner.  If you want to get emails when I make new posts, there’s a subscription box to the left in the sidebar.  It’ll give you a nasty looking Captcha that you have to figure out (Took me a couple of tries when I subscribed.) but the option is now available.

If you have any problems, feel free to add your comment to this post or drop me an email.

edit: Per a request, we now also have a Feed for Comments.

Free Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny’s – 2/3/2009

dennys-weekday-breakfast-slam.jpgThis just came my way.  It’s being reported that Denny’s will run a commercial during the Superbowl offering a free grand slam breakfast on February, 3rd, 2009.   Haven’t seen much in the way of sites promoting this and I’m not going to be able to watch the Superbowl tonight.  Would love to hear back from someone if they see it on television.  We actually have a Denny’s here in Charlotte.  Well one left, just north of the city.

Here’s the copy:

Every guest from 6AM – 2PM on Tuesday will receive 1 free Grand slam, and 1 free coupon book with 8 coupons in it. Each coupon book has 4 BOGO’s, 2- 25% off coupons, 1 coupon good for free dessert , and 1 coupon good for a free order of pancake puppies. Each Denny’s in the US received 1,000 of these coupon books to hand out to guests on Tuesday who order a free Grand Slam.

Per Denny’s Corporate every store also received 500 Grand Slam rain check coupons. Denny’s has instructed each manger to hand these rain checks out good for a free Grand Slam to any guest who can’t wait.

Denny’s spent 3 million on the Super Bowl ad, and tons more on a full page ad this coming Monday in USA Today. They are taking this very seriously and instructing all stores to staff as if it’s a major Holiday and for the staff to be as friendly as humanly possible.

Commercial during the SuperBowl will announce this.

And don’t forget that we’ll have iHop’s Free Pancake Day on the 24th as well.

edit: This has now been confirmed.  A copy of the commercial is after the fold if you want to view it.

Google Street View Car Kills Bambi, Censors Pictures Afterward

google_maps.jpg

Google got caught with images of one of their Google Street View vehicles hitting a deer that had run in front of the vehicle and stopping to take additional pictures.

Google Maps is now returning a “high demand” error for the image.  I guess they noticed something was up.  Have to wonder how the images got there in the first place.  Did the driver not tell anyone from Google?  Would seem rather strange.  How else would they explain the damage to their vehicle?

Of course you can find other interesting pictures from Google Maps and Google Street View.

Discovered from here first (Sorry guys but I liked your title too much.) which grabbed it from here which grabbed it from here.

Animaniacs – Presidents

Animaniacs_PresidentsRichard Byrne over at Free Technology for Teachers posted today a video showing the 44 United States Presidents in order.  Have to admit I prefer, even if it is a bit out of date, the Animaniacs version.

One has to wonder which young students will remember ten years down the road.

Barney Expresses His Own Opinion of the Election

barney.jpg

Well, I guess Barney’s upset that the Republicians pretty much lost the election.  He took out his anger on Jon Dekker, a member of the White House Press Corp from Reuters.

Maybe, as First Lady Laure Bush put it, “he was done with the paparazzi.”

He’s probably lucky Dick Cheney didn’t shoot him. 🙂

As an aside, what Barney was probably concerned about what all that stuff in the reporter’s left hand.

Is Google Adsense beginning to feel the economic pressure?

google-adsense-check-corsarius.jpgGot an interesting email in my inbox a few days ago.  Here’s a copy of it:

Dear Publisher,

We understand that the recent economic turmoil has created a lot of uncertainty in the lives of AdSense publishers. During these difficult times, we’re continuing to invest in innovations that improve publisher monetization and advertiser value in the content network.

We’re focusing on further developing our product offerings and boosting ad performance for publishers. We recently announced advancements in AdSense for search and experiments to make ads more effective. We’re bringing DoubleClick technologies to AdSense publishers, and we’ll continue to launch new products and features. We’re also continuing to improve our offerings for AdWords advertisers, making it easier for them to target the Google content network. Features for advertisers, such as the new display ad builder, are designed to improve ad performance on AdSense publisher sites.

We’ll keep driving technological progress, but our best asset will always be our publisher partners. The strength of AdSense lies in the value of the content you bring to users and the quality of the sites you bring to advertisers. Our success is tied to yours. We look forward to partnering with you for the long term, and remain dedicated to helping you succeed.

Sincerely,

Kim Scott

This email is regarding the AdSense account associated with ca-pub-8234810200509513.

While it’s nice that Google Adsense is concerned about the “recent economic turmoil” that we’re going through, I have to admit that I’m really getting fed up with them. Time and time again, when I view my blog, all I see is adverts for Family Guy and Dungeons and Dragons stuff in the right sidebar. Granted posts about those subjects are fairly popular on this site, I serious doubt they’re displaying to those folks interested in those topics.

Now I know I’m not supposed to tell you my percentages and I’m not going to. This site hasn’t done that well with them. The Youtube video downloader simply in scale as it gets considering the number of hits each day it gets. And it gets a lot of them.  It kind of balances out and the other site supports this one.

Now I’ve tried tricks to get decent adverts to display. We used to get nothing but steak adverts here which did little good. I wrapped both the title line and the h1 tag line in code that told the Google Adsense bots to not look at that stuff and it pretty much worked. At least I rarely see them. But what do I see on my Gallery or Flickr? Post? You guess it. D&D and Family Guy. What a surprise.

I for one hope something can be done about this as I’m out of ideas.

Now I’m going to sit back and watch all the Google Adsense spam hit this post.  And, no, that’s not why I wrote it.

You Got Trouble at Dr. Mike’s

Not really.  Just a quick mention that we’re moving some accounts around this afternoon so stuff may not work right.  To keep you busy, he’s Conan O’Brien giving us his version of “Trouble” from the 2006 Emmy Awards.  I actually bookmarked this quite some time ago and have been looking for an excuse to use it.
