As many of you know, I work with a number of area churches and organizations that assist the area homeless. Recently, Van Miller, a columnist for Charlotte Magazine, wrote an article on one couple who I help. Their names are Arthur and Debbie and I’ve been helping them since about 2000. They come uptown three times a week and pass out upwards of 500 hot dogs, soda, clothing and supplies. Arthur’s been doing it for about 16 or 17 years now.
The article is an interesting read. I have to admit though that I take exception to characterizing all the folks who come out as having “hair [that is] unkempt, their clothes dirty, fingernails long, teeth brown.” That kind of bothers me. Yes, some folks are like that but far from all of them which is how I read the article.
There’s some pictures up in the gallery. They’re all mixed in together though. I’ll sort them if I have time tomorrow. The photo I’ve included here is from the article. (My own pictures aren’t that good.)
Breakfast was cool. Had eggs, bacon, and biscuits. I think I was the only non-church person there so i had to introduce myself a number of times but I didn’t mind. I walk by the church twice every day when I head over to UNCC. Didn’t get any pictures as my batteries died with the other breakfast this morning under the bridge.
I finally got a chance to look over the most read posts for January. I probably should do some sort of Top Post widget in the sidebar. (edit: Done now.)
I‘ve mentioned a number of times that I do work with some of the area organizations that work with the area homeless. I took this picture this morning under the bridge as both volunteers and neighbors were waiting for the supply van to show up. It’s 6:20am in the morning, it’s still dark, directly overhead is I-277 that loops around the uptown area of Charlotte, and it was something like 30 degrees this morning.
I would have taken more but the batteries died in the camera. (I’ll explain more about that later on.) I just wanted to share the picture.
Gotta admit that I hate doing pictures but I had someone send me this one from when I was on the first train out of the station when the LYNX light rail system started on Nov. 24th. Even beat all the higher ups who were supposed to be on the first train. (Not sure why. We started at the 7th Street Station while they started at the Transit Center.)
Got lucky as well. Had just finished helping Calvary Church serving breakfast to the homeless that morning. I was walking over to CPCC to use the library and the train was just sitting there.
A quick plug for Brandon’s Smile Ministry. I’ve known Tommy and Donna Hendley for a bit now as they help feed breakfast on Saturday mornings with Calvary Church out on the street. They handed out about 150 loaded backpacks a couple days before Christmas to the local homeless after breakfast. (Heck, I took one. You should see what my duffel back looks like.)
edit: I need to get a better copy of the logo. It’s actually the patch from one of the backpacks.
As some of you are aware, I work with a number of organizations (ie churches) and a few individuals who work with the homeless here in Charlotte. I also travel thru the Uptown Charlotte Transportation Center on my way here to the library every day.
Angie has decided that I’m stalking her since I’m always there with these groups. She appears to be bad mouthing me to friends of hers and I’ve now been threatened four times, including by her current boyfriend.
She has admited to me that she is bipolar and delusional. She is also not taking her medication. Others have stated the same as well.
Needless to say, I’m not doing well. I’m really stressed and have broken down in tears a few times.
Keep her in your prayers please. She needs it.
edit: I had one group Saturday ask me not to come back. I’ve been helping them for three years. Sucks.
