Arthur the Hot Dog Guy

0608_VAN_hotdog.jpg

As many of you know, I work with a number of area churches and organizations that assist the area homeless.  Recently, Van Miller, a columnist for Charlotte Magazine, wrote an article on one couple who I help.  Their names are Arthur and Debbie and I’ve been helping them since about 2000.  They come uptown three times a week and pass out upwards of 500 hot dogs, soda, clothing and supplies.  Arthur’s been doing it for about 16 or 17 years now.

The article is an interesting read.  I have to admit though that I take exception to characterizing all the folks who come out as having “hair [that is] unkempt, their clothes dirty, fingernails long, teeth brown.”  That kind of bothers me.  Yes, some folks are like that but far from all of them which is how I read the article.

There’s some pictures up in the gallery.  They’re all mixed in together though.  I’ll sort them if I have time tomorrow.  The photo I’ve included here is from the article. (My own pictures aren’t that good.)

Free Coffee at Hardee’s on Mondays

HardeesNew_4color.gifIt’s strange that no one is blogging about this but Hardee‘s is doing Free Coffee on Monday’s for the time being.  I don’t see anything on their website about the promotion but there’s signs up all over their stores.  They’re probably doing this to promote their new Channel Islands Roasting Company coffee that they have introduced.  There’s no mention on how long this will last and the employees I asked didn’t know either.

I got my free cup this morning.  I’m debating on hitting them again on the way home.

Photos from Newell Presbyterian Church

I met a very nice young lady by the name of Rachel at the free breakfast over at Newell Presbyterian Church this past Sunday and she took some pictures for me. (Actually I think her mom took most of the group shots.)

I’ve gotten a chance to sort most of the other photos as well. I need to sit down and write descriptions though for them some time soon.

Ninja Burger

ninjaburger.jpgA quick plug for Ninja Burger as well as the Charlotte Transit category here on the blog since Google’s spiders can’t see it too well.  The video, found after the break, got a chuckle out of me as well.

Rumor has it that you can grab the Ninja Burger RPG core rulebook (the older first edition, not he newer second edition I’m afraid.) from here.

Does anyone every think of identity theft?

identitytheft.jpg

On my walk in this morning to UNCC, I found a recent letter from the IRS on the side of the road.  While the letter contained the name and current address of the person, (Of course it would.  It is a letter after all.  How else would it get to the person?) the person’s social security number and phone number were also included in the letter.

Besides wondering why the IRS would send out such a letter containing such information in light of all of the problems with identity theft in today’s world, one has to wonder why and how the letter wound up on the side of the road.  If I was some person with evil intent, I could be going nuts with this information.  Can you say “Wide screen television”?  I knew you could.

Santos Ernesto Alvarado of Charlotte, NC?  You got very lucky today.  I shredded the letter that you lost.

Free Breakfast at Newell Presbyterian Church

pancakebreakfast.gifJust a quick note that Newell Presbyterian Church located here in Charlotte (I’d say it’s in Newell but that’s what they list as their mailing address) is having free breakfasts every Sunday morning from Feb 10th until March 23rd for the community starting at 9:15am.  I should be there tomorrow eating if anyone is in the area.

As an aside, I’m going to have to switch domains again for this site.  WordPress.com is not allowing me to renewal the domain and refuse to discuss the problem with me.

National Pancake Day – February 12, 2008

npd-757621.gif

I noticed a number of place on line are already mentioning Free Pancake Day at IHOP.  I’ve had problems with getting mine here in Charlotte but other folks have had good results with it.

From their site:

Join IHOP to celebrate National Pancake Day on Tuesday, February 12, 2008. From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., we’ll give you one free short stack (three) of our famous buttermilk pancakes.* All we ask is that you consider making a donation to support local children’s hospitals through Children’s Miracle Network, or other local charities.

Disclaimer: There is a limit of one free short stack per guest. The offer is valid at participating restaurants for dine-in only while supplies last and is not valid with any other offer, special coupon or discount.

Discussed here, here and here previously.

I wonder if I’ll get them this year.

Under the bridge at 6:20am

I100_0695‘ve mentioned a number of times that I do work with some of the area organizations that work with the area homeless.  I took this picture this morning under the bridge as both volunteers and  neighbors were waiting for the supply van to show up.  It’s 6:20am in the morning, it’s still dark, directly overhead is I-277 that loops around the uptown area of Charlotte, and it was something like 30 degrees this morning.

I would have taken more but the batteries died in the camera. (I’ll explain more about that later on.) I just wanted to share the picture.

Someone asked for a picture…

CIMG0008Gotta admit that I hate doing pictures but I had someone send me this one from when I was on the first train out of the station when the LYNX light rail system started on Nov. 24th.  Even beat all the higher ups who were supposed to be on the first train. (Not sure why.  We started at the 7th Street Station while they started at the Transit Center.)

Got lucky as well.  Had just finished helping Calvary Church serving breakfast to the homeless that morning.  I was walking over to CPCC to use the library and the train was just sitting there.

Got a t-shirt out of it at least.

A plug for Brandon’s Smile Ministry

Brandons_Smile.jpgA quick plug for Brandon’s Smile Ministry.  I’ve known Tommy and Donna Hendley for a bit now as they help feed breakfast on Saturday mornings with Calvary Church out on the street.  They handed out about 150 loaded backpacks a couple days before Christmas to the local homeless after breakfast. (Heck, I took one.  You should see what my duffel back looks like.)

edit: I need to get a better copy of the logo.  It’s actually the patch from one of the backpacks.
