crispygamer.pngI've been reading Backwards Compatible and Ding for a bit over at Crispy Gamer for a few weeks now and I really enjoy them. (OK, I wish Ding had more back story and published more often.  I'll admit to that.)  Imagine my surprise though to see in this comic a 30 day trial message for what I'm assuming to be the image uploader or ftp software.  Something labeled RADActive I-Load.  There's no less than 4 of the comics like that.

Now I don't mind folks using trial software.  Right now I'm using the 2nd release candidate of Movable Type 4.2. (And I just love how the auto-save sends the cursor to the front of the post every time it goes off.) I just would think that one should make sure stuff like that would be visible in a production environment.

Not being negative by the way.  It just bothers me.  Go read the comics. They're good for some laughs.

Are you a pirate?

drm-burn-in-hell-729666.jpgI was going to promote Shamus Young's webcomic Chainmail Bikini but it appears he's no longer going to continue it.  Pity.

I will mention though that he has a pair of interesting articles posted about his take on Video Game Piracy and Digital Rights Management that may be of interest.  He even takes a shot at Penny Arcade's new game, On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

I don't run into the problem of re-registering my games that much.  The computer I have at home is fairly old and most of the games I play came out when DRM hadn't been created as a anti-piracy program.  I think the newest game I play is Morrowind and that came out in 2002. (I do have Oblivion but I know my system can't handle the graphics. Maybe in a few years.) I'm still going through the old Dungeon and Dragon's Gold Box games from way back when and those sit on my flash drive.  I have to type in a CD key when I install something but I don't mind doing that.

One comment that bothers me is how some folks who have purchased the game have to obtain a crack just to get around the security program.  I had that issue way back when when CD games first came out. (Trying to remember what game it was.  Maybe Pizza Tycoon?) I had a CD burner in that computer at the time and the game saw it and refused to play.

edit: Oh, forgot to mention that Mr. Young also did a Lord of the Rings Photoshop'ed webcomic called DM of the Rings.  It's finished now but it's a good read.  I wonder if he'll start a new one of the Hobbit.

Dork Tower gives us their take on Dungeons and Dragons 4th edition.  I wonder what Roger E. Moore's opinion on them dropping half-orcs is.  I seem to remember him playing one way back when.

Do You Work Here?

I can't remember where I found out about this webcomic but I wanted to promote it here.  Do You Work Here?  It's about the employees of Shop Mart, a Wal-Mart rip off and what they go though during their workdays.  It's only been around since January, 2008 and they only publish twice a week so there's not much back story yet.  The archives are a quick read but I'm sure you'll get a chuckle out of it.
Unshelved
I can't remember where I found this but here's a link to the webcomic Unshelved, based on the library staff at the fictional Mallville Public Library.  There's a couple of years of material there so it'll take you a bit to read all of it.  I've already added it to out links page.

You may be familiar with it by it's former title, Overdue.

Just a quick plug for a webcomic I recently came across, Customers Suck!  It's weekly and they have a forum as well.

garfield.pngSo what happens when you take Garfield, the cat, out of Garfield, the comic?  You get an "even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life."

Garfield Minus Garfield

edit: Discovered here.

Edit: Oops forgot the link.

Do you own a suit?

phd031408s.gifJen Slackenerny from PH.D. raises an interesting question: "What kind of grown man doesn't own a suit?" I don't own one.  Not even a sports coat.  I've got a couple of dress shirts hanging in the closet.  A ton of ties. (When I worked for Eckerds, we had to wear them.  I liked collecting the weirdest ones that i could find.) I don't go to weddings or funerals.  I don't really dress up for anything.  God knows that I don't date any more.

Anyone else care to step up and admit that they don't own one?
Bruce Waginslaw left a comment awhile back on my post where I was asking folks to suggest some webcomics for me. He suggested two that he does. Gotta admit that I'm more into story line webcomics like Multiplex, MegaTokyo (which I still have problems spelling) and Order of the Stick while these are more one panel works but I did get a chuckle out of them so I'll give him a plug and add them into the links page.

Savage Chickens and WebDonuts

Give them a try today and let me know what you think.  When you visit Savage Chickens, to flip through the comics, take a look at the Cartoons box along the left hand side.  That lists the current comic you're looking at as well as the previous ones.  That's the only way I could figure out how to go through the previous comics.

If anyone else cares to suggest a comic, please feel free to do so in the comments to this post.

Where are they today?

A long while back, I ran through most of the webcomics that I read and did a lookup of their Google Pageranks.  I was readding the post here and decided to check to see if there was any update on their scores:

http://www.applegeeks.com/ - Still a PR6
http://www.dorktower.com/ - Went from a PR6 to a PR5
http://www.machall.com/ - Also went to a PR5 from a PR6
http://www.phdcomics.com/ - Stayed the same as a PR7
http://www.vgcats.com/ - Remained a PR6
http://www.pvponline.com/ - Remained a PR7
http://www.drinkatwork.com/mediumlarge.html - Dropped to a PR0 since it's no longer online.
http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/ - Dropped to a PR5 from a PR6
http://www.chugworth.com/ - Dropped to a PR5 from a PR6
http://www.alpha-shade.com/ - Stayed a PR5
http://www.megatokyo.com - Dropped to a PR6 from a PR7.  That surprised me.

It's moot though as William Perry shut down his blog.
